PURPOSE: A protection apparatus and a controlling method thereof are provided to effectively protect load equipment from electromagnetic pulses by detecting a current passing through a short pulse and middle pulse protective circuit. CONSTITUTION: A switching unit(110) electrically connects or blocks a power line and load equipment. A pulse protection unit protects load equipment from electromagnetic pulses included in a current flowing in the power line. A sensor(120) detects the current passing through the pulse protection unit among the current flowing in the power line. A controller(130) controls the switching unit to block the electrical connection between the power line and the load equipment. A power supply unit(140) supplies power to the controller.
