An electrically chargeable energy store 110 comprises multiple energy cells 170 connected in series, a sensing device 175 for cell voltages of the energy cells and a processing device. The processing device is set up to determine the setpoint charging current depending on differences between the sensed cell voltages. A method for charging an electrically chargeable energy store with multiple energy cells connected in series includes steps of sensing cell voltages of the energy cells, determining a setpoint charging current through the energy cells on the basis of the differences of the sensed cell voltages, and limiting a charging current flowing through the energy cells to the determined setpoint charging current. The setpoint charging current can be determined on the basis of the highest sensed cell voltage, the highest maximum cell voltage of one of the energy cells, and/or a relationship of cell voltages. The temperature of the battery or individual cells can also be sensed by further sensing devices 180, 185 and used to determine charging current. |
