<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium using, for a magnetic recording layer, L1<SB POS="POST">0</SB>-type FePt regular alloy that has excellent magnetic characteristics while using a MgO ground layer which can be formed in mass production process and of which film thickness is equal to or less than 3 nm. <P>SOLUTION: A conductive compound having a crystal structure belonging to a cubic system is used as the material of a ground layer provided on the lower part of a MgO ground layer.
