A liquid crystal lens comprises a first liquid crystal cell, a second liquid crystal cell, and an intermediate layer sandwiched therebetween. The first liquid crystal cell comprises a pair of first and second transparent substrates, a first liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the first and second transparent substrates, and a first electrode disposed between the first transparent substrate and the first liquid crystal layer. The second liquid crystal cell comprises a pair of third and fourth transparent substrates, a second liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the third and fourth transparent substrates and disposed in a direction orthogonal to the first liquid crystal layer, and a second electrode disposed between the fourth transparent substrate and the second liquid crystal layer. The intermediate layer comprises a high dielectric constant layer sandwiched between the first liquid crystal cell and the second liquid crystal cell so as to be in contact with the second transparent substrate and the third transparent substrate, and a third electrode that has an opening and is connected to ground.
