[Also in Groups XXIV and XXXIV] A clothes washing machine has an agitator and rotatable tub alternatively drivable through agitator and spin drums 86, 140 driven by one or two motor-driven friction rollers, with different speed ratios in the case of two rollers, the agitator drum 86 supporting at an angle an arm 97 which is connected to the agitator through a spherical bearing 102 and a flexible connection 120. The flexible connection 120 consists of rubber bonded to each of two plates, one fixed to a shaft 62 and the other to the spherical bearing 102. The agitator is fixed on the shaft 62 and is reciprocated as the agitate drum 86 rotates. The rotatable tub is driven through a tubular shaft 64 screwed at its lower end into the spin drum 140. An octagonal well 160 in the upper end of the spin drum 140 contains an octagonal brake pad 162 supported on a spring washer 163. A spiral spring 170 with one end connected to the shaft 64 and the other to the spin drum 140 tends, when wound up, to screw the spin drum 140 up the shaft 64 to bring the brake pad 162 into effective contact with a stationary brake plate 180. When the spin drum 140 is driven from the motor, it screws itself down the shaft 64, until it contacts a stop 152, thus winding up the spring 170 and leaving the brake 162, 180 only lightly engaged. When motor drive is stopped, inertia and the spring 170 screw the drum 140 up the shaft 64 to apply the brake 162, 180. Specification 935,447 also is referred to. |
