PURPOSE: A wireless communication system for the low-power operation of a terminal, and an operation method thereof are provided to variably control the DRX(discontinuous reception) period and the status information report period based on the quality level of the transmit environment. CONSTITUTION: A wireless communication system for the low-power operation of a terminal comprises the following: a wireless link measurer(11) measuring the quality of a wireless link with a network device(20); a power trigger unit(12) controlling the power on and off of the terminal(10); a control command receiver(13) receiving control commands for controlling the status report cycle and the intermittent receiving cycle from the network device; and a status report transmitter(14) transmitting a status report including the information regarding the measured quality of the wireless link.
