An electrolyte for a primary battery utilizing a magnesium anode comprises an aqueous mixture of (1) an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal salt of either an aliphatic carboxylic acid having a chain length of from 1-5 carbon atoms exclusive of carboxy group carbon atoms and at least one methylene or methyl radical for each carboxy group or an aromatic carboxylic acid having at least two carboxy groups on each ring of the aromatic acid and (2) an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal inorganic perchlorate salt.
