Detergent compositions comprise (a) a water-soluble anionic, non-soap, organic detergent, (b) a water-soluble salt of a C8- 18 fatty acid, and (c) a quaternary ammonium halide having one C10- 20 alkyl group. Component (a) may be one or more of many known anionic detergents containing sulphate, sulphonate, carboxyl or phosphate groups, including alkyl-benzene sulphonates, salts of sulphated polyethenoxylated phenols and alcohols, alkyl sulphates, isethionates, fatty ethanolamide sulphates, taurides, and hydroxy-alkane sulphonates. Specified cations in the anionic detergents are Na, K, Li, and Mg. Component (b) may be a conventional sodium or potassium soap, e.g. potassium oleate, others being specified. Typical of many specified components (c) are cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and arachidyl diethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. The compositions may also contain an inorganic or organic builder salt, including neutral and acid sodium phosphates and condensed phosphates, sodium silicate and meta-silicate, sodium carbonate, sodium sulphate, borax, tri-sodium nitrilo-tri-acetate, and the tetra-sodium salt of EDTA. Further optional ingredients mentioned include fatty acid alkanolamides, xylene and toluene sulphonates, ethanol, ethylene glycol, hexylene glycol, sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose and other cellulose derivatives including ethers and sulphates, polyvinyl alcohol, and a wide variety of bleaching agents, including sodium hypochlorite, sodium and potassium perborates, potassium permonosulphate, chlorinated cyanuric acid derivatives, and N-chloro hydantoins and imides. The compositions may take the form of beads, grains, flakes, chips, powders, and tablets. In particular, they may be prepared by spray-drying an aqueous slurry of the ingredients to give hollow, thin-walled spherical particles. |
