The method involves determining the time course of guidance moment signal (7) corresponding to the movement of steering wheel of motor car. The features indicating the characteristics of free hand travel are extracted from the time course of guidance moment signal. The extracted features are summarized in a feature vector. The feature vector is classified into a class which defines the characteristics of free hand travel. An independent claim is included for device for detecting free hand travel of rider in motor car.
