<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light modulation element having no need to use a transparent electrode for a drive electrode, and capable of increasing an aperture ratio and efficiently modulating polarization besides accurately sensing a magnetization reversal action, and a spatial light modulator using the light modulation element. <P>SOLUTION: A light modulation element 1 is formed on a substrate 7 transmitting light and comprises a spin injection magnetization reversal element structure in which a magnetization free layer 3, intermediate layers 21, 22 and magnetization fixation layers 11, 12 are laminated in this order. The light modulation element 1 further comprises a transparent electrode layer 8 between the substrate 7 and the magnetization free layer 3. In the light modulation element 1, the magnetization fixation layers 11, 12 are made up of two magnetization fixation layers 11 and 12 separated on one same plane and the two magnetization fixation layers 11 and 12 are fixed in magnetization intensity antiparallel to each other, and respectively a magnetic body having a larger coercive force than the magnetization free layer 3. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
