<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photodetector including an avalanche photodiode operating in a Geiger mode with high reaction rate, high sensitivity and high noise resistance. <P>SOLUTION: A photodetector 100 comprises: a silicon photo-multiplier that has an array of a plurality of avalanche photodiodes 10a-10d used in a Geiger mode; and a plurality of discrimination circuits 14a-14d that convert output signals from each of the avalanche photodiodes 10a-10d into rectangular pulses.
