METHOD FOR ELIMINATING CARBON CONTAMINATION OF PLATINUM-CONTAINING COMPONENTS FOR GLASS MAKING APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of making a platinum-containing component used in a glass making apparatus to mitigate the formation of these gaseous inclusions in molten glass.

SOLUTION: The method includes: providing a first platinum-containing metallic member (stirrer shaft 44) and a second platinum-containing metallic member (sleeve 72); coating at least a portion of either one or both of the first platinum-containing metallic member (stirrer shaft 44) and the second platinum-containing metallic member (sleeve 72) with an oxygen generating material (80); and joining (at welds 74) the first platinum-containing metallic member (stirrer shaft 44) and the second platinum-containing metallic member (sleeve 72) to form an assembly, wherein at least a portion of the oxygen generating material (80) is disposed in an interstitial volume between the first platinum-containing metallic member (stirrer shaft 44) and the second platinum-containing metallic member (sleeve 72).
