<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple method for encoding a watermarked message and extracting it. <P>SOLUTION: A watermark system discriminates three separate bits, or a logic 0 bit, a logic 1 bit, and a marker bit which defines a message block border by using two separate bit patterns. The correct orientation is determined by checking an input image after turning it 90 degrees to see which orientation embodies the highest number of effective bits.
