The stator 202 comprises a plurality of circumferentially spaced-apart stator poles magnetically coupled to one another, consecutive stator poles 206 alternately comprise magnet-containing stator poles 206a and magnet-free stator poles 206b. Each magnet-containing stator pole 206a has an armature winding 220 thereabout and comprises a radially-extending circumferentially-polarised permanent magnet. The stator has 6n stator poles (where n is a positive integer not equal to zero) and the rotor has either 10n rotor poles or 11n rotor poles (where n is a positive integer not equal to zero). Each magnet 218 is flanked by pole teeth 214a, 214b. As described, two three phase armature windings are employed on the stator and an electric circuit for driving the machine is disclosed. |
