A method of detecting a susceptibility to squamous-cell oesophageal carcinoma in a human subject, the method including the steps of obtaining from the subject a biological sample such as blood, plasma, serum and biopsy tissue which includes DNA encoding a hepcidin antimicrobial peptide (HAMP) allele; and testing the biological sample for the presence of a mutant HAMP allele having a G to T transition at position -429, wherein the presence of the G to T transition at position -429 is indicative of a susceptibility of the subject to oesophageal cancer. The testing of the biological sample is carried out by PCR amplification of the hepcidin antimicrobial peptide (HAMP) allele and sequencing of the PCR products. A diagnostic kit for use in detecting a susceptibility to squamous- cell oesophageal carcinoma in a human subject, a composition for use in a method of detecting a susceptibility to squamous-cell oesophageal carcinoma in a human subject, and the use of a HAMP allele, or part thereof, as a biomarker for oesophageal cancer, are also provided. |
