Provided are a method and system for providing preview video, a media server and a playing terminal. The method includes: a metadata request sent from a playing terminal is received by a media server(101); metadata information of the video requested to be played by the playing terminal is obtained according to the metadata request and the metadata information is transmitted to the playing terminal(102); a preview video request sent from the playing terminal according to the metadata information is received(103); the preview video requested from the preview video request is transmitted to the playing terminal(104).With the embodiments of the present invention, the playing terminal can automatically request and obtain preview video from the media server, thereby shortening the waiting time when the playing terminal user views the preview video.
