A method and apparatus (100) for determining or measuring a muzzle velocity of a projectile is disclosed. In one of the embodiments, the measurement apparatus (100) comprises a gun barrel (1) with a muzzle brake (3) and an oscillator (4). The oscillator (4) is electrically connected via a signal supply (5) to a transmission coupler (6), in order to excite it. A reception coupler (7) is used for signal reception and is connected via a cable (8) to a receiving unit (9). The receiving unit (9) comprises a detector (9.1) and signal processor (9.2). The two couplers (6, 7) are integrated in the muzzle brake and form a couple pair. The oscillator (4) excites the barrel and muzzle brake, which acts as a waveguide (1, 3), via the transmission coupler (6). The frequency indicates the frequency below which waves are attenuated rather than propagated through the waveguide (1, 3). The muzzle velocity of the projectile is determined from measurements of the electromagnetic signal generated in response to the operation of the waveguide (1, 3).
