The method involves setting a value of operational parameters of an engine (4) by a user through a control device. The control device is adjusted to take multiple position or settings and designed to set a value from multiple values of the operational parameter. The value of the operational parameters is assigned to the position or setting of the control device based on a characteristic graph. The value of the operational parameters is changed as a function of one or more operating modes of a motor car (2). The control device is designed as an accelerator (8), a speed control or regulation device and/or driving assistance system.
