A vehicle door mounted on concealed hinges is opened and retained by means comprising a tension spring stressed during closing of the door and a compression spring stressed during opening of the door. The arrangement described provides for limited opening of the door when it is released, and further opening when it is moved to a predetermined extent beyond the position of limited opening. In the drawing, the door has outer and inner sheets 6, 7, the latter being continued to join the former, and is hingedly supported at 9 on a fixed post 4, and the vehicle wall has outer and inner sheets 1, 2 and a sheet 3 bounding the door opening, the mechanism being placed between the sheet 3 and the edge of the door. A tension spring 12 between an angle plate 14 on the sheet 2 and a lug on the door edge acts constantly in a direction to open the door, and a compression spring 19 is housed in a telescopic cylinder 21, 22 pivoted to the plate 14 at 13 and slidably engaging a plunger 24 pivoted to a bracket 17 fixed through the door edge sheet to a stiffening plate 18 in the door ; in the position shown the cylinder cap 22 is pressed outwards to a limit imposed by stop screws 28 engaging slots in the body 21, and the spring 19 is held under stress. When the door fastening is released the door swings open under the action of the spring 12 until a collar 30 on the plunger 24 engages the cylinder cap 22, whereupon the motion is yieldingly stopped by the spring 19 ; the door may be opened further by hand to the position in which the cylinder and plunger lie on the line joining the points 13, 9, after which the spring 19 acts to move the door to the fully open position, assisted by the spring 12. |
