Polling performed by multiple applications running on a device is coordinated. A central scheduling function can periodically issue polling event messages to the applications. The applications can, in turn, request the transmission of polling signals to their respective servers to request application updates. By coordinating and synchronising transmission of polling signals, battery consumption and network communication resources can be optimised. Suitable for conserving power in devices with wireless transceivers which are required to exit from a low power sleep mode to transmit polling signals. A timer is set wherein the periodicity of polling events may be determined from an average, a weighted average, the most frequent or the least frequent, of the preferred polling periodicities of the respective multiple applications. |
