PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem wherein a deviation of a response characteristic of a variable valve timing apparatus lowers the controllability of valve timing. SOLUTION: When valve timing is held, a holding dead band appears in which the rate of change in valve timing is small even when a duty value as an operation signal to a variable valve timing apparatus is changed slightly. The holding dead band extends, and exposes individual variability with decreasing temperature. When valve timing is held, a deviation of a response characteristic of valve timing is learned according to the rate of change in valve timing under a slight change in the duty valve D from within the holding dead band to the outside of the band.
