A luminescent composition or article consists of or contains a copolymer of maleic imide and an alkyl maleate. The copolymer is luminescent when subjected to U.V. rays.ALSO:A copolymer of maleic imide and an alkyl maleate is claimed and may be prepared by subjecting the monomers to a temperature of, e.g. 50-75 DEG C., in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. 0.5-2% of benzoyl peroxide or azodiisobutyronitrile. The alkyl maleate may be dimethyl, diethyl, dibutyl or dioctyl maleate. The copolymerization may be carried out in the absence of air in bulk or in a solvent in which the monomers are soluble but the copolymer is insoluble, e.g. methanol. The copolymer may be purified by dissolving in, e.g. dioxane, dimethylformamide or tetrahydrofuran, and removing by distillation unreacted monomers with the solvent. |
