A spherical container for gas and liquid is supported on a concrete foundation, Fig. 7, a pad body 2 of non-metallic material being interposed between the container and the foundation. Stays 16 may be provided between the foundation and the container; the stays are preferably slack and are connected to the container by non - metallic cementing. The pad body 2 is made of material having a low modulus of elasticity, such as natural or synthetic polymers or polycondensation products; the pad may be made of two synthetic resins which are capable of being cast and one of which has a low modulus of elasticity and which are mixed, waste products which are polymers or polycondensation products, e.g. rubber meal obtained by abrasion, being included as fillers. The pad body 2 may be protected by a thin metal shell 5 which is cemented to the container ; alternatively the shell does not enclose the pad body where the latter makes contact with the container and/or the foundation. The shell may be made in two parts 10, 11, Fig. 6, between which is a cage 12 comprising annular tubes 13 disposed one above the other, the cage being capable of yielding in a vertical direction but being capable of withstanding peripheral tension. |
