PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tape cassette and a printer, which discriminates both a type of printing tape stored in a tape cassette, and the state of a lid of a printer being closed, at the same time. SOLUTION: When a tape cassette 101 is mounted onto a printer 1, a mover 121 of the tape cassette 101 is positioned facing a tape type discriminating device 11 of the printer 1, and when a lid 2 of the printer 1 is opened, a first protrusion 123 of the tape cassette 101 is protruded from a first case opening 112 of the tape cassette 101 into an energizing state. When the lid 2 is closed, the lid 2 comes into pressure contact with the first protrusion 123, the mover 121 is moved toward a second case opening 113 of the tape cassette 101, and a second protrusion 124 of the tape cassette 101 is detected through the second case opening 113 by the tape type discriminating device 11.
