PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can compensate variation in discharge timing, control discharge timing of ink drops suitable at any working temperature, and obtain excellent print quality with little shifting of a striking position of the ink drops from a nozzle. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus, which forms an image on a medium to be recorded by scanning with a carriage mounted with a recording head for discharging ink drops, controls position and speed of the carriage while detecting the position and the speed of the carriage by encoder signals which are output according to moving of the carriage. After a correction amount concerning discharge timing of the ink drops is determined based on a correction chart obtained by outputting at different discharge timings at a fixed temperature, a correction amount concerning discharge timing at a temperature during printing is determined according to temperature characteristic of an electronic component which is involved in a transmission circuit of the encoder signals.
