Disclosed is a photoelectric conversion element provided with, between a pair of electrodes: a cross-sectionally comb-shaped electron-donor layer comprising a base section and a cross-sectionally striped section in which a plurality of cross-sectionally strip-shaped parts, which extend in a direction intersecting the principal surfaces of the electrodes, are formed at intervals; and a cross-sectionally comb-shaped electron-acceptor layer comprising a base section and a cross-sectionally striped section in which a plurality of cross-sectionally strip-shaped parts, which extend in a direction intersecting the principal surfaces of the electrodes, are formed at intervals. The photoelectric conversion element has an active layer in which the plurality of cross-sectionally strip-shaped parts of the electron-donor layer and the plurality of cross-sectionally strip-shaped parts of the electron-acceptor layer are joined in an alternating manner. The stripe width a of the cross-sectionally striped section of the electron-donor layer and the stripe width b of the cross-sectionally striped section of the electron-acceptor layer are both between 5 nm and 100 nm. If a and b are equal, the thickness c of the active layer is between twice and 40 times a (= b). If a and b are not equal, the thickness c of the active layer is at least twice the smaller of a and b and no more than 40 times the larger of a and b.
