PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal surface treatment method which can stably form a metal compound layer on the surface of a work within a short period of time, can improve poor productivity being a great drawback of a molten salt treatment method, and can facilitate apparatus maintenance. SOLUTION: The metal surface treatment method for forming a metal compound layer on the surface of the work 9 by allowing the metallic work 9 to reside in a molten salt 10 includes a step of holding a solid treating agent 8, which forms the molten salt 10 by heating and melting, and the work 9 in a container 7, and a step of heating the treating agent 8 and the work 9 held in the container 7 for forming the metal compound layer on the surface of the work 9 by heating the treating agent 8 and the work 9 under exclusion of air while they are kept in a state that the solid treating agent 8 surrounds the periphery of the work 9 in the container 7 to raise a reaction resulting from the contact of the work 9 with the liquid molten salt 10 formed from the treating agent 8 molten by the heating under exclusion of air.
