PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a memory controller having a function suitable for use in moving image decoding and encoding processing or three-dimensional graphic rendering processing. SOLUTION: In a memory controller memory 10, input image data are compression-processed. As a result of the compression processing, if a data amount is reduced, the compressed data are stored into a memory while if the data amount is not reduced, the non-compressed data are stored into the memory. An area block is provided in the memory to store data after the data are divided by a predetermined size when the data are not compressed. Irrespective of whether the compression is made or not, the data are stored from the top address of the area block. The data storage top address, a data amount and information indicative of whether the data are compressed data or non-compressed data are separately stored as map information.
