PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the wear of a fixing rotating body and/or a pressure rotating body caused by a separation pawl, without making a fixing device complex and large in size, in the fixing device in which the separation pawl is brought into contact with the fixing rotating body and/or the pressure rotating body. SOLUTION: The separation pawl is provided to freely come into contact with or separate from the fixing rotating body and/or the pressure rotating body. When the toner adhesion amount of the top end of a paper in its conveying direction is a predetermined amount or more, when the image writing position of the paper is at a predetermined distance or less from the top end of the paper in its conveying direction, when the direction of a fiber member constituting the paper is a direction crossing the conveying direction, or when the surface temperature of a fixing roller is lower than set temperature by predetermined temperature or more, or when humidity is a predetermined value or more, the separation pawl is brought into contact with the fixing roller.
