PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely obtain the detecting time periods between the lines and accurately detect the color shift amounts at the positions where the resist compensation toner pattern largely shifts for the sensing position in the main scanning direction and the top line or the lowest line approaches the slanted line. SOLUTION: This image forming device has image forming means 6Y, 6M, 6C, and 6K to form toner patterns 21 each consisting of two lines 21a, 21b parallel in the main scanning direction and a slanted line 21c on the image carrier 5, a detection means 16 to detect the toner patterns, and a compensation means 20 to correct the color shift amounts in the main scanning direction based on the toner patterns detected by the detection means 16. The detection means 16 detects first detection time t1 to detect the parallel top line 21a and the slanted line 21c on the toner pattern, and second detection time t2 to detect the slanted line 21c and the parallel lowest line 21b on the toner pattern. The compensation means 20 corrects the color shift amounts in the main scanning direction by using the longer detection time out of the first detection time t1 and the second detection time t2.
