PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a continuously variable transmission which can be simplified in constitution and reduced in cost even if the transmission has a low-mode clutch and a direct-mode clutch. SOLUTION: The continuously variable transmission is constituted of a toroidal continuously variable change gear 1 and a planetary gear mechanism 2. In a low mode in which the low-mode clutch is connected and the direct-mode clutch 19 is disconnected, rotating forces at the input side and the output side of the toroidal continuously variable change gear 1 are inputted to the planetary gear mechanism 2, and an output form the planetary gear mechanism can be obtained. In a direct mode in which the low-mode clutch is disconnected and the direct-mode clutch 19 is connected, the rotating force from the toroidal continuously variable change gear 1 is outputted irrespective of the planetary gear mechanism 2. By making the low-mode clutch as a one-way clutch 26a, the continuously variable transmission can be simplified in constitution and reduced in cost. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
