PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit excessive displacement acting on a base isolation device, prevent breakage and functional deterioration of the base isolation device and allow easy retrofitting construction to an existing base isolation device. SOLUTION: A fail safe mechanism 1 includes sliding bearings 11, which are arranged around the base isolation device 3 provided between an upper foundation 2A and a lower foundation 2B, are fixed to the upper foundation 2A and have sliding materials 12 on lower surfaces, and a slide plate 13 provided on the lower foundation 2b for sliding the sliding materials 12 in a radial direction centered on the center axis of the base isolation device 3. A slide surface 13a of the slide plate 13 is inclined upward as it extends to an outer peripheral side in the radial direction so that a clearance is provided between the sliding surfaces of the sliding materials 12 and the slide surface 13a of the slide plate 13 in a state that no relative displacement is caused between the upper foundation 2A and the lower foundation 2B and the sliding surfaces and the slide surface 13 contact with each other in a state that the relative displacement is caused.
