The present invention relates to the electrodeposition of elemental zirconium at a temperature of less than 100°C from a mixture of a Lewis acid, a zirconium salt and an ionic liquid. In the preferred embodiment, the Lewis acid is GaCl3, the ionic liquid is 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and the zirconium salt is bis(1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium) hexachlorozirconate. |
