In order to reduce power consumption, brightness of a light source of a backlight is reduced in accordance with variability indicating variations or instability of brightness of images displayed on a display panel. Disclosed is a brightness control device that reduces brightness of a light source when brightness of images is high while the variability is moderate (time t0 to time t1 and time t2 to time t3), that reduces the brightness of the light source regardless of the brightness of the images while the variability is high (time t1 to time t2), and that gradually reduces the brightness of the light source when the brightness of the images is high or moderate while the variability is low (time t3 to time t4).
