Glass ribbon, emerging upwardly from the annealing chamber of the drawing apparatus, is scored both longitudinally and transversely and, in order to prevent premature division along the longitudinal lines when the ribbon is snapped along the transverse lines, the former are interrupted adjacent the points at which they would otherwise intersect the latter. The transverse scorer is operated when the leading edge of the rising ribbon engages a switch, not shown. The longitudinal scorers 17 normally engage the ribbon but when the leading edge engages a switch 42, earlier than it engages the switch controlling the transverse scorer, it closes a circuit to open a valve 56 to admit fluid pressure to a cylinder 60, thereby causing a rod 63 to rise and swing a bail 30 to move the scorers 17 out of contact with the glass. The scorers return to contact after an adjustable time by means of a trip member 70, operated by the rising rod 63, freeing the notched arm 51 from the lever 53 controlling the valve 56 thereby permitting the latter to close and the rod 63 to descend and rock the bail 30 in the reverse direction.
