<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a foreign object from being attached to an optical member of a pickup device constituting a drive unit assembly when the pickup device or the drive unit assembly having the pickup device is transported. <P>SOLUTION: A protection member 10 having a structure detachably mounted to a pickup device 20 and capable of protecting optical members 31 and/or 32 of the pickup device 20 is configured. When the protection member 10 is viewed in plane, the protection member 10 is formed into a substantially E-shape while being provided with a cover unit 13 capable of protecting the optical members 31, 32 at the substantial center, and a paste unit 15 attachable to a fixed member 80, and the protection member 10 is positioned at the periphery or in the vicinity of the cover unit 13 and also positioned at the periphery or in the vicinity of the optical members 31, 32. The pickup device 20 includes at least the optical members 31/32 and the detachable protection member 10 capable of protecting the optical members 31/32.
