In a nuclear reactor the cooling fluid in each fuel element duct is examined in sequence by a radiation detector to detect damage to the element sheaths. The ducts are arranged in sets and the sets are connected in groups, each group having a primary detector which examines each set of the group and a supervisory detector which examines the ducts of a faulty set. The first sets of the groups are examined in turn and the system then switches to the second and subsequent sets of the groups. The timing device is formed of electrically driven cams which operate microswitches controlling the duct primary and supervisory valves. In a further embodiment, the sets are monitored in sequence round each group in turn.</p> |
