PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the supporting strength for preventing the axial deviation/movement of coupling members of a coupling device for a vehicle seat without enlarging the coupling device. SOLUTION: The reclining device 4 (the coupling device for the vehicle seat) includes a ratchet 10 and a guide 20 as the coupling members, and pawls 30, .. as locking members. The pawls 30, .. are supported in the circumferential direction relative to the guide 20 to lock the relative rotation between both members by the engagement with an inner toothed surface 12a of the ratchet 10. Stoppers 27, .. are formed in the guide 20. The stoppers retain the separated state in normal time when the respective pawls 30, .. are engaged and locked with one another, but prevent the axial deviation/movement by pressing the outer toothed surface 30a of a specific pawl 30 whose outer toothed surface faces the direction of action of large loads when the large loads causing the axial deviation/movement between the guide and the ratchet 10 are input.
