925,284. Fluid actuation of switches. SCOVILL MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 30, 1961 [Nov. 23, 1960], No. 38819/61. Class 38 (5). [Also in Groups XIX and XXIX] A fluid-pressure actuating means comprises a self-supporting body of elastomeric material consisting of a multiplicity of integrally united elastically-walled and hermetically closed gascontaining cells, in which the body is held in a fluid pressure medium with one surface in fixed position and an element secured to the opposite surface of the body to be actuated by compression and expansion of the body in response to fluid pressure variations. In the embodiment shown, the elastomeric material 26, such as natural or synthetic foam rubber, is secured to the base 27 of a chamber 24 which has a fluid-pressure inlet 25. A plate 30 cemented to the other end of the material 26 provides a connection from a lead L 1 to a switch contact 31 while the other switch contact 32 is fixed to the chamber casing. In the position shown the pressure has caused contraction of the material to open the switch and when this pressure is reduced the material expands to close the switch.
|
