Separation of hydrogen from coke oven gas is effected by forcing feed mixture by compressor 3 through heat exchangers 5, 6, 8 and 9, thereby effecting partial liquefaction, passing the wet feed gas into a phase separator 11 and then passing the unliquefied crude hydrogen into a column 17 where it is washed with liquid natural hydrocarbon gas forced by a pump 13 through heat exchangers 12, 16 to effect subcooling prior to entry into column 17 from the head of which hydrogen is withdrawn. The mixture of liquid natural gas and most of the nitrogen content of the feed mixture is withdrawn from the base of column 17 and is added to the liquid (mostly methane) from separator 11 and after expansion in a valve 22 is used to cool exchanger 9 thereby being in part vaporized. Hydrogen withdrawn from the <PICT:0975628/C1/1> head of column 17 is expanded in a turbine 19 and any solid methane particles are removed by a cyclone 7a which is periodically switched with a cyclone 7 which removes solid carbon dioxide particles produced in exchanger 6 and the sopurified cold hydrogen is warmed in exchangers 5, 6 before being discharged as product. |
