987,247. Seals. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 4, 1962 [Sept. 20, 1961], No. 33708/61. Heading F2B. In a compressor comprising an impeller shaft 1 extending through a gland 4, 6 into a compressing chamber 3 and a cavity 7 in the chamber wall 2 adjacent the gland in which oil leaking along the shaft is collected before it reaches the gland, means are provided to cool the cavity and minimize the formation of oil vapour therein. Oil from a shaft seal (not shown) escapes through a passage 9 into the cavity 7 and is drained therefrom through a drain 8. Cooling fluid, which may be oil, is circulated through passages 12 in the wall of the cavity 7; the fluid being supplied at 10 and extracted at 14. Preferably, the gland components 4, 6 are also cooled by fluid supplied to the interior 17 of the component 4 from passages 12 through ducts 21 and to the interior 18 of the component 6 through tube 16, bore 15 and ducts 19. Plates 11 form a capacitor which by means of an electrical circuit gives an indication if blockage of the drain 8 occurs.
