A method for detecting a target analyte associated with nano-sized gold and/or silver detection labels in a microarray of samples, the labels being indicative of presence or absence of a target analyte in a sample, comprises, illuminating a sample group with at least one wavelength light, said sample group including a plurality of samples potentially containing the target analyte, detecting intensity of light reflected, absorbed or emitted from the sample group when illuminated with the or each wavelength, recording groups of values associated with the light intensity reflected, absorbed or emitted from the sample group, with each group of values associated with the or each wavelength, comparing the groups of values associated with each wavelength light and determining the presence or absence of the target analyte based on the highest value. The light may be in the IR-visible-UV range.
