The method involves parallely connecting a high pressure pump (22) driven independent of an internal combustion engine (1) relative to a suction- and pressure side of a mechanically driven high pressure pump (33). The high pressure pumps are operated in a normal operating mode in compliance of a condition. A fuel is supplied by the mechanically driven high pressure pump to pressure storage in the normal operating mode. The high pressure pumps are operated in a special operating mode. The fuel is supplied by the high pressure pumps in the special operating mode. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine comprising a control device.
