PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a functionally gradient composite material in which a thick-walled homogenous surface part of nearly uniform hardness exists and hardness is decreased from the surface toward the inner part, and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: A power mixture of metal particles and ceramic particles is compacted, and the resultant green compact is sintered into a porous sintered compact. After a catalyst-containing solution is impregnated into the inner part of the porous sintered compact and then dried, a catalyst-containing organic solution is impregnated into the inner part of the porous sintered compact. After a coating film is formed on the surface of the porous sintered compact if necessary, the porous sintered compact is resintered and densified into a dense sintered compact (functionally gradient composite material 10) as a product. As the catalyst-containing organic solution, metal alkoxide is suitably used. |
