PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that can suppress faulty transfer of a second toner image. SOLUTION: A polarity of toner of the second toner image on a transfer belt 10, which has been transferred from a photoreceptor 1 that is a first image carrier to the transfer belt 10 that is a second image carrier, is changed to a polarity opposite to the polarity of the toner on the photoreceptor 1 by a separation charger 21. The second toner image on the transfer belt 10, the polarity of the toner of which is changed, is conveyed to a transfer nip again. The second toner image on the transfer belt 10 is electrostatically transferred to a back surface of transfer paper when a first toner image on the photoreceptor 1 is electrostatically transferred to a front surface of the transfer paper at the transfer nip.
