The invention comprises compounds of the general formulµ in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> each represents an alkyl group, an alkoxycarbonyl group or aryl or substituted aryl group; R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> each represents a hydrogen atom, a C 1 -C 4 alkyl group, a halogen atom or a C 1 -C 4 alkoxy group, and X represents an acid anion. The compounds of Formula I or II are prepared by condensing a cyclopentanone of general formula with a weakly basic secondary amine or an acid addition salt thereof. The compounds of Formula III or IV are prepared by condensing a compound of general Formula I or II with ethylisoformanilide. Examples are given of the preparation of (a) 1-di(ethoxycarbonylmethyl)- aminocyclopentene; (b) 1-cyclopentylidenephenylaminium perchlorate; (c) N-(2,5-dianilinomethylene cyclopentylidene) diphenylaminium perchlorate; (d) 1-cyclopentylidenemethyl phenylaminium perchlorate; and (e) 2-anilinomethylene - 2 - (N - methylanilino) - 1 - phenylimino-methyl cyclopentene.
