PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of early and surely detecting defective separation of paper (image forming medium) from a secondary transfer belt, and easily removing the paper of which defective separation is detected. SOLUTION: A simple and easy, low-cost sensor 49 comprising a rotary lever 51 and a reflection type optical sensor 54 is disposed between a secondary transfer part 40 and a belt type fixing device 37. The paper detecting position of the sensor 49 is located at a distance L2 from the secondary transfer part 40. Since the distance L2 is shorter than a distance L1 between the secondary transfer part 40 and a cleaning part 45, when the leading end of the paper is not detected by the sensor 49 even after a lapse of time required for the leading end of the paper passed through the secondary transfer part 40 to reach the paper detecting position of the sensor 49, it is judged that jamming occurs in the direction toward the cleaning part 45 due to the sticking of the paper to the transfer belt 24, so that the whole device is stopped so as to urge the maintenance to recover from jamming.
