Combined rolling and hammering process to strengthen the surface of a metal component forming part of e.g. a gas turbine engine

In a process to strengthen the surface layer of a metal component forming part of e.g. a gas turbine engine by a rolling process, the rolling action is overlain by a hammering action. The dual rolling/hammering action is regulated by a numerical control program and varies as required to impart a pre-defined microstructure or smooth structure. The rolling tool oscillates in the direction of main impact at an ultrasonic frequency. The rolling tool is ball-shaped and used in the vicinity of apertures e.g. drilled cut in the metal.
