<p>A honeycomb structure having honeycomb segments integrally joined together at the outer walls thereof by a jointing material containing inorganic particles. The honeycomb segments each have an entrance-side end face on the fluid entrance side, an exit-side end face on the fluid exit side, outer walls for interconnecting the outer peripheral sections of the two end faces, and cells partitioned and formed, on the inner side of the outer walls and between the two end faces, by partition walls which consist of a porous body and functioning as fluid flow paths. In the honeycomb structure, if the average distance between local crests on the surfaces of the outer walls is S, the arithmetic average surface roughness of the surfaces of the outer walls is Ra, the porosity of the outer walls is a, the average diameter of pores in the outer walls is b, and the average diameter of the inorganic particles is c, X represented by the expression (1) below and Y represented by the expression (2) below satisfy the relationship represented by the expression (3) below.
