PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of protecting a photoreceptor, even when the linear speed of a photoreceptor is high and producing long-lasting high quality images, and to provide a protective agent for use in the image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a charging means for uniformly charging the surface of the photoreceptor, an exposure means for forming a latent electrostatic image on the surface of the charged photoreceptor; a developing means for developing the latent electrostatic image into a toner image; a transfer means for transferring the developed toner image to a transfer body; a cleaning means for cleaning off residual transfer toner with a cleaning blade; and a protective agent application means for applying the protective agent onto the photoreceptor. The protective agent contains zinc stearate, zinc palmitate, and boron nitride, wherein the ratio of the zinc stearate to the zinc palmitate is in the range of 75:25 to 40:60 (by weight).
